A medicinal garden is really a must have. Many are so connected with our pharmaceutical drugs that we are willing to take pills that could give us 3-7 other diseases to cover up what is really ailing us. Are we out of our minds? Now am I totally against pharmaceutical drugs, no – but very limited and only if there isn’t a way around it naturally. Most of our illnesses are caused by our dietary fast food consumption, lack of exercise and pesticides and drugs that are in our food sources.

Well, part of taking back my life was beginning to grow various herbs for my soaps and lotions, but then I understood it was needed for medicinal uses, al;so.

The original plants I started were:

  1. Aloe Vera
  2. Daisy
  3. Peppermint
  4. Spearmint
  5. Thyme
  6. Rosemary
  7. Chamomile
  8. Holy Basil
  9. Lemon Balm/Melissa
  10. Calendula
  11. Sage
  12. Lavender
  13. Valerian
  14. Comfrey
  15. Catnip
  16. Purple Echinacea
  17. Wild Lettuce

Both the Purple Echinacea and Valerian takes 2 years before the root is mature to harvest. Both of these plants are grow in an above ground planter to easily remove the root without damaging it, when the time was right. The Purple Echinacea I use the flower, leaf, stem and root.

The only herb on the list above that I do not use for both my body & bath products I make is Valerian. This is strictly used as an herbal medicinal tea or as a tincture for those nights we need to sleep better or a light tea in the day for anxiety.

Now since we live in Hawaii, we have certain limitation on what medicinal plants are able to grow well here in the middle of the Pacific and up at 2000 feet elevation. Look in your area to see what will grow well and which plants you would personally like to have in your medicinal garden.

I hope that you will look at the beneficial properties of these plants to help you live a good life.

Here is a short clip on the Valerian plant. Enjoy!
